About Kidney Donation

Living kidney donation is my best option to survive

This is a very difficult search, and although I know the chances are low, I still have hope.

You can visit the websites for detailed information about kidney donation:
Nierdonatie – Door een levende donor – Radboudumc
Nier doneren (nieren.nl)

You can reach out to me by sending an email and we can discuss everything together. We will also get assistance from Radboud Hospital.

You can also give Radboud Hospital a call to ask your questions or discuss your situation before registering as a potential donor.

Confidentiality and consent

I completely understand the difficulty of this decision. It is very important for me to highlight that your consent comes first, and you always have the chance to change your mind. Even right before the surgery this is possible.

I would appreciate if you can reach out to me separately when registering at the hospital. This is because the hospital keeps the process confidential and do not share with me what part of the process you would be. I respect your privacy, and I do not need to know every detail. It is, however, important for me to have an idea so that I can decide to stop searching for new donors or keep looking.

Registration and screening

After the registration, you will go through a detailed screening that may take around 3 months. It involves conversations with a nephrologist, a social worker, and medical examinations. This screening procedure makes sure that:
– You are not under high risk (immediate or long-term risks)
– You are a good match
– You have consent for the whole period

With the button below, you can find detailed information on screening procedure:

Who can donate a kidney?

You can be a potential donor for me if you meet the following criteria:
– Blood group O (If you do not know yet, you can get tested at your GP)
– Above 18

You cannot donate if you have:
– Decreased kidney function
– (Predisposition to) diabetes
– Severely overweight
– Hereditary conditions (kidney, hearth, vascular diseases)

If you’re a female considering kidney donation and plan to have children, it’s important to inform the transplant center. You may also want to consult with your own doctor beforehand. While donating a kidney doesn’t affect your chances of getting pregnant, it’s recommended to avoid pregnancy during the first year after donation to allow time for recovery. Additionally, women who have donated a kidney may face a slightly increased risk of developing high blood pressure during pregnancy.
